Modern Revivals: Contemporary New Zealand Furniture, features award-winning furniture by New Zealand designers who draw inspiration from the sleek lines of twentieth century modernist design, while addressing twenty-first century values such as comfort, space and financial constraints and the environment. Modern Revivals highlights how good design can add value to our day to day living, celebrating the pleasure we receive from the beauty of a well-crafted object.
Working together, the curator and I developed the layout for this show, as well as a visual identity and small publication to accompany it. Because these items of furniture were all contemporary works inspired by European modernism, this was taken as an influence to create the sleek and elegant aesthetic.
This gallery can sometimes overwhelm the objects in it, with its long, narrow proportions and high walls. To counteract this, I designed the overlapping rectangles in colours which complemented the works on display, which were then painted onto the walls. This tied together the vertical and horizontal shapes of the furniture with those of the columns and the space.
