DISCIPLINE:
Merchandise, Print
My Roles: Graphic Designer (Sole)

Shapes of Pōneke cards are currently available in my shop or at Unity Books, the Beehive Visitor Centre, The Dowse Art Museum and Whirinaki Whare Taonga.

For this project I challenged myself to represent Pōneke Wellington in symbols.

Working as a graphic designer for over a decade, part of my practice has been producing signage and infographics for museums and corporate clients. In this sphere, symbols need to be universal and clear, which often means that they are quite sterile and lacking in character. For Shapes of Pōneke, I wanted to play with the balance between this style of standardised icons, and more abstract illustrations with personality and a hand-drawn aesthetic.

The result is sixteen illustrations representing Wellington's cultural and natural qualities, arranged in eight diptychs on appropriately-coloured backgrounds. My hope is that each design is fairly discernible, but that local knowledge may provide additional clarity.
